Operators to implement new EU roaming cap rates

(Prices in Euros)
Under the European Union’s Regulation, from 1st of July 2010, roaming charges for calls made from mobile phones while in another EU country will fall to EUR 0.39 per minute for calls made and EUR 0.15 per minute for calls received. The receipt of a voice mail message while roaming in another EU country will be free of charge. Moreover, the operators will have to impose a EUR 50.00 cut off limit per month for its subscribers who surf the Internet with their mobile phone and laptops while traveling in other EU countries. The regulation also lowers the wholesale cap of EUR 1.00 per MB down or uploaded to EUR 0.80 per MB. (all prices without VAT)
Tarifica’s Take:
All the EU-country mobile operators are required by the European Regulation to reduce rates whilst roaming in the region. The winners in this ruling are the users who will spend the summer on holiday or visiting overseas countries whilst on business. Taking as a reference KPN users in the Netherlands, in terms of outgoing voice calls, KPN Mobile users will save 9% on the previous rates whilst for receiving a call will result in a 21% saving. As well as the reduction of voice rates, KPN Mobile is setting the automatic monthly data roaming limit of € 50.00 (ex VAT). This applies to users of mobile internet on a laptop or SmartPhone device. Once 80% of the limit has been reached, users are sent a free SMS informing them of this. It is our expectation that other providers will quickly follow in suit in imposing the data roaming limit of EUR 50.00.
