Greek operator Cosmote has launched a Christmas promotional campaign during which it offers unlimited data free of charge for 10 days to all subscribers. This offer is available to all prepaid subscribers as well as CosmoKarta and What’s Up customers from 16 December 2019 through 2 January 2020. Subscribers can activate the Christmas offer at any time, so that they can choose the time period that best serves their data needs. The package can be activated either through the My Cosmote app or through the operator’s What’s Up app.
The free Christmas package is being offered in response to increased subscriber needs for communication and entertainment during the holidays. Total mobile data traffic over the Cosmote network exceeded 3 PB during Christmas of 2018, representing a 70 percent year-on-year increase.
Tarifica’s Take
The Christmas holiday is an occasion for mobile operators to foster closer bonds with their subscribers and to enhance their brands. Each year at this time, operators launch promotions designed to further these aims.
In addition, Christmas, along with New Year’s Day, is a time of above-average data consumption due to people’s desire to connect with family and friends; therefore, on these holidays, free data offers are sure to be more highly appreciated than they would be otherwise. Cosmote’s figure on 3 PB on its network last year is certainly an impressively large one, and if the year-on-year increase is repeated this year, it will, of course, be far larger.
Cosmote’s package of free unlimited data for 10 days perfectly answers the need for extra data use during the holiday season—subscribers who want to share pictures, video, or music can do so for a time period that spans Christmas and New Year’s. And the fact that the data is available at no extra charge is certain to make them feel grateful to the operator.
This particular offer has a feature that raises it above the level of the usual Christmas promotion: the fact that as long as it is signed up for during the stated time span, the data can be used during any 10-day period of the coming year. So while it is a Christmas offer, it is not actually limited to Christmas. Giving not only a generous gift of data but also flexibility should make this offer doubly persuasive. Cosmote should be able to benefit significantly from this in terms of both customer retention and customer acquisition.
