Facebook is in the testing phase with a new, Wi-Fi hotspot plan that allows mobile users to surf the net for free. Local businesses will provide internet access at no cost in exchange for the Facebook router, which will direct those logging in to that local business’s Facebook page.

This plan is an example of a non-MNO stepping into the marketplace to provide users with mobile services, and represents yet another way for subscribers to be able to access the internet without eating into the data allowance provided by the operator. We believe this type of offer is something that all MNOs need to take seriously. With major, high-profile players like Facebook and Google encroaching on their turf, mobile operators have every reason to be concerned.
