Spanish MVNO Ion Mobile has launched an early data-led holiday offer, giving users the opportunity to purchase a 100GB data bundle, dubbed ‘Nougat,’ for a one-time payment of EUR 3.00 (US $3.10). The extra data can be used through the end of January 2023, and anyone subscribed to the company’s plans with unlimited calls will be able to acquire the bundle.

Like many other industries, the holiday season (mid-November through early-January) is a competitive time for telecoms. As each carrier presents their most appealing deals in the hopes of attracting new customers, the temptation to switch service providers increases for customers.

Ion’s offer demonstrates a particular creativity during this period of heightened competition. At 30GB, 50GB and 70GB tiers, Ion’s prepaid plans don’t exactly offer staggering amounts of data. An extra 100GB of data on top of that, at an extremely low price point, could make a very real difference to customers.

The key to the entire promotion, however, is that the extra data can be used through the end of January 2023. With the purchase of this extra 100 GB boost of data, customers may be more reluctant to switch carriers before the end of the promotional period. In this way, Ion creates a way to increase the likelihood that customers will commit to their service, at least for two months. By that time, of course, the seductive holiday offers will have disappeared from the landscape.
